How to Open HEIC Files on Windows (Free, No Software)

If you’ve copied photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC and double-clicked one only to get an error — or no preview at all — you’ve met the HEIC format. The good news: your photos are fine, and you can open or convert them in under a minute without installing anything.

Why won’t Windows open HEIC files?

HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones use by default. It stores the same-looking photo in roughly half the file size of a JPG, which is great for your phone’s storage — but Windows didn’t support it for years, and many apps still don’t. So when you open a .heic file on a PC, Windows often shrugs.

Other ways to open HEIC on Windows
